Kazan: Russia's Most Advanced Nuclear Submarine, Withstands 100 Days Under the Sea

The Kazan, the first submarine of Project 885M, entered the White Sea for sea trials, the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet announced Tuesday.

"The ships and support vessels of the Northern Fleet White Sea Base are starting another marine test phase of the newest Kazan multipurpose nuclear submarine of the upgraded Yasen-M class," said the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet.

"The sub's crew is testing the systems and mechanisms in an underwater position," the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet was quoted as saying by the TASS news agency.

A submarine armed with the Dmitry Donskoy nuclear warhead ballistic missile (TK-208) was involved in the Kazan test, among other ships.

Kazan began construction on July 24, 2009 and launched in 2017.

These nuclear-powered submarines could join the Russian Navy by the end of 2020 to serve in the Northern Fleet.

With a length of 139 meters, a width of 13 meters, and a dive weight of up to 13,800 tons, Kazan can carry up to 90 crew.

This submarine is capable of maneuvering up to 31 knots or 57 kilometers per hour.

Not only that, Kazan can dive to a maximum depth of 600 meters. And, can survive under the sea for up to 100 days.

The Kazan was not only designed to ground enemy submarines and warships, but also Navy bases and other important targets. This submarine can carry 300 torpedoes.

However, the main weapon of the Project 885 / 885M submarine is the Kalibr cruise missile and / or the Oniks nuclear warhead.

Kalibr cruise missile with a range of up to 2,600 km. The Kalibr missile is the equivalent of the United States' Tomahawk missile.

But in the end, the Kazan and other Project 885 / 885M submarines will carry the Tsirkon hypersonic missile as their base weapon.

Russia has only one Yasen class submarine in service, the Severodvinsk.

The Project 885 nuclear-powered underwater cruiser began joining Russia's Northern Fleet in 2014.

The Yasen and Yasen-M class are the first 4th generation multipurpose submarines for the Russian Navy.

In addition, it is the most expensive and technically the most advanced in the Russian Navy.
