Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey: Why July 2026 Is the Biggest Movie Month of the Year

Two Blockbusters Are About to Dominate Every Conversation This July
If you think summer movie season peaks in June, think again. July 2026 is shaping up to be an absolute monster at the box office, headlined by two massive releases that have been years in the making: Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day — Tom Holland's Next Chapter
After the multiverse madness of No Way Home (2021), fans have been waiting five long years for Tom Holland to suit up again. Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters July 11, and it's being positioned as a fresh start for Peter Parker — no more Avengers safety net, no more Iron Man legacy. This time, Spidey is dealing with street-level crime in a New York City that has completely forgotten who he is.
Zendaya returns as MJ (though her role is reportedly more limited this time), and the villain lineup includes Crime Master and Tombstone, played by Michael Mando and Lashana Lynch respectively. Director Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is bringing a grittier, more grounded tone to the franchise. Early test screenings have reportedly been extremely positive, with sources calling it "the most emotionally raw Spider-Man yet."
The Odyssey — Christopher Nolan Goes Full IMAX Epic
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is the movie event of the summer, if not the year. Shot entirely in IMAX 70mm (a first for a feature film), this adaptation of Homer's ancient epic stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland (yes, he's having a massive month) as Telemachus. The film runs a reported 2 hours and 40 minutes and features what Nolan has called "the most ambitious practical effects sequence ever filmed" — a 45-minute storm sequence shot in open ocean.
The world premiere happened in early July and critics are already calling it a masterpiece. The Hollywood Reporter described it as "a visceral, exhausting, transcendent experience," while Variety gave it a perfect score. With Nolan's track record — Oppenheimer grossed nearly $1 billion in 2023 — this is expected to be a box office juggernaut.
Also opening in July: The Invite (July 3), a comedy from Lionsgate, and Minions and Monsters (July 3) from Illumination. But let's be real — Spider-Man and The Odyssey are the two movies that will dominate every dinner conversation, every tweet, and every TikTok this month. Budget accordingly.
