Summer 2026 Box Office Is On Fire: Devil Wears Prada 2 Leads a $4 Billion Season — What's Coming Next

If you thought summer movie season might finally be losing its magic after years of pandemic hangovers, the 2026 box office has other plans. The domestic box office is already sitting 14% ahead of the same period last year, and industry forecasters at Comscore are eyeing a potential $4.2 billion summer — the kind of number we haven't seen since the legendary Barbenheimer summer of 2023.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 Kicks Off a Massive Start

20th Century Studios and Disney's The Devil Wears Prada 2 led the charge with a massive $76.7 million opening — proving that star-driven sequels with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway still have serious theatrical muscle. But the real surprise has been Lionsgate's Michael, which held strong with a $54.4 million second weekend, bringing the combined opening weekend total to a whopping $173.1 million. That makes it the second-best summer kickoff since the pandemic, trailing only 2022's $222.3 million opening led by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

"This is shaping up to be one of the best summer movie seasons of all time," said Paul Dergarabedian, Head of Marketplace Trends at Comscore. And honestly, looking at the lineup, he's not wrong.

What's Coming: Mortal Kombat 2, Masters of the Universe, and More

The next few weekends are stacked with major releases. New Line's Mortal Kombat 2 is tracking for a $50 million opening, going head-to-head with The Devil Wears Prada 2's expected $40 million hold and Michael's third weekend at around $30 million. That's a weekend any exhibitor would dream about.

Then June 5 brings serious counterprogramming: Amazon MGM Studios is dropping Masters of the Universe for the family and action crowd, while Paramount and Miramax are releasing Scary Movie for comedy fans. Early tracking suggests Scary Movie could be pacing similarly to Scream 7, which opened to a franchise-record $63.6 million. Even the most conservative projections put it well above Naked Gun's $16.8 million debut last summer — which remains the highest post-pandemic opening for a pure comedy.

Other notable releases on the calendar include Paramount's Billie Eilish concert film (projected at $6M–$9M), Amazon MGM's Sheep Detective (eyeing $12M+), and a total of 57 wide releases this summer — significantly more than last year's 44.

But There's a Catch: Fewer Big Films, More Pressure on Each One

Not everything is rosy. Out of those 57 wide releases, only 34 come from major studios or established indie labels like A24 and Neon. The rest are smaller indies with thrift-level marketing budgets. As Kevin Goetz, founder and CEO of Screen Engine, puts it: "Fewer movies are now doing more of the heavy lifting due to a new ecosystem since the streaming disruption."

And with Paramount's newly acquired Warner Bros. committing to just 30 films a year under David Ellison's leadership, the studio strategy is clear: fewer releases, bigger budgets, and maximum marketing behind each one. Whether that approach delivers a sustained box office boom or just a few massive spikes remains to be seen.

The Bottom Line

Summer 2026 is giving movie fans exactly what they've been craving: event cinema that actually feels like an event. Whether you're team Mortal Kombat, team Masters of the Universe, or just here for the Devil Wears Prada nostalgia, there's genuinely something for everyone. Grab your popcorn — it's going to be a wild ride through August.
