Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey Is Stacking the Most Insane Cast of 2026 — And It Drops in July

Christopher Nolan Is Bringing Homer's Epic to IMAX — With a Cast That Feels Like a Fever Dream

If you thought Oppenheimer was Christopher Nolan at his most ambitious, hold onto your seat. The Oscar-winning director is coming back to theaters this summer with The Odyssey — a massive IMAX-shot adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic, and the cast he's assembled is borderline ridiculous.

We're talking Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, and — yes — Travis Scott. All in the same movie. All playing characters from one of the oldest stories ever told. It's the kind of casting that either sounds like a prank or the greatest ensemble of the decade.

The Cast Breakdown: Who Plays Who

Here's where it gets wild. Nolan isn't just going through the motions — he's matched every actor to a specific figure from Greek mythology:

  • Matt Damon as Odysseus — the battle-scarred hero trying to make it home after the Trojan War
  • Tom Holland as Telemachus — Odysseus's son, waiting for his father's return
  • Anne Hathaway as Penelope — Odysseus's loyal wife, holding off suitors back in Ithaca
  • Robert Pattinson as Antinous — one of the primary antagonists among Penelope's suitors
  • Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy / Clytemnestra — playing dual roles across the Greek mythological universe
  • Zendaya as Athena — the goddess of wisdom, guiding (and manipulating) Odysseus throughout his journey
  • Charlize Theron as Calypso — the nymph who holds Odysseus captive on her island
  • Mia Goth as Melantho — a servant with complicated loyalties
  • Travis Scott as Demodocus — the blind bard who sings of Troy's fall (and yes, it's the rapper's first major acting role in a blockbuster)

That Travis Scott casting alone broke the internet when the trailer dropped on May 5th. People lost their minds — some calling it genius, others saying it was pure marketing chaos. But honestly? That's the Nolan playbook: surround himself with controversial choices and let the work speak for itself.

Why This Could Be Nolan's Biggest Movie Yet

Think about it. Nolan's already proven he can make cerebral blockbusters — Inception, Interstellar, Tenet, and Oppenheimer all pushed boundaries in different ways. But The Odyssey gives him something he's never had before: a 3,000-year-old story with built-in monsters, gods, and a non-linear narrative that Homer basically invented.

Nolan himself has said he wants to do justice to what he calls the "original non-linear narrative." That sounds exactly like the kind of puzzle-box storytelling he excels at. Imagine Memento meets Gladiator meets Inception — that's the vibe we're looking at here.

Shot entirely in IMAX, the film is set to release on July 17, 2026, right in the middle of summer blockbuster season. It's going up against Toy Story 5 from Pixar and the Spider-Man film from Marvel Studios, but Nolan's track record suggests he doesn't need to play it safe.

The first trailer already dropped and it gave us glimpses of Damon as the weathered Odysseus, Holland as his desperate son Telemachus, and Hathaway as the fierce Penelope holding down Ithaca. With Zendaya as Athena pulling the strings from above, this could genuinely be the most visually stunning blockbuster of the decade.

July can't come fast enough.
