The Greta Gerwig-directed phenomenon grossed a jaw-dropping $1.4 billion worldwide, made Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling a certified on-screen duo, and turned "I'm Just Ken" into a global karaoke anthem. So a sequel should be the easiest greenlight in Hollywood history, right?

Apparently not. According to The New York Times, the Barbie 2 deal is stuck — and the clock is ticking. If Warner Bros. and the talent can't reach an agreement soon, the rights to Barbie could revert to Mattel, forcing the studio to start over from scratch with none of the magic that made the original work.

What's Holding Up the Deal?

Here's the wild part: the holdup is basically money. Sources say Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav won't sign off on a deal that includes box-office profit participation and pay raises for Robbie and Gosling. Gosling was reportedly offered $20 million to return as Ken — but even that wasn't enough to close the gap.

A Warner Bros. representative told the NYT that the talent's reps "declined the last offer, made in May, and have not yet countered with a new one." Studio co-chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca added in a statement: "We have a rights deal with Mattel in place and have made a series of big offers to try and finalize deals to make the next Barbie film. Unfortunately, we have been unable to reach an agreement thus far."

The tricky part? Robbie, Gosling, and Gerwig all signed one-movie deals for the original — a rare move that means none of them are contractually obligated to come back. Gerwig and her writing partner Noah Baumbach reportedly already have a sequel story ready, but they're keeping it under wraps until the deal is done.

Even if a deal magically came together tomorrow, we'd still be waiting a while. Gerwig is currently deep in production on Narnia: The Magician's Nephew for Netflix, while Robbie has already started filming the Ocean's 11 prequel. In other words, everyone involved has a full plate — which makes the stalled negotiations even more frustrating for fans holding out hope.
