Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has earned a 2026 Emmy nomination for his lead role in Wonder Man, marking Marvel Studios’ first acting Emmy nomination in five years. The Disney+ series, created by Destin Daniel Cretton (who also directed Shang-Chi and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day), has been a critical darling since its debut.

Wonder Man follows Simon Williams, a struggling actor in Los Angeles who discovers he has superhuman abilities. The show has been described as “the anti-Barry” — a grounded, character-driven take on the superhero genre that focuses more on Hollywood satire than epic battles.

A Different Kind of Marvel Show

Unlike the typical MCU spectacle, Wonder Man is essentially a love letter to the L.A. entertainment industry. Sir Ben Kingsley also stars, reprising his role as Trevor Slattery from Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi, bringing both humor and heart to the ensemble.

Destin Daniel Cretton has described the show as “grounded and fun,” and has already hinted at a potential Season 2 as well as connections to Shang-Chi 2. The series represents a new direction for Marvel’s streaming content — smaller in scale but richer in character development.

The last time Marvel received an acting Emmy nomination was for WandaVision in 2021, when Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany both earned nods. Since then, Marvel’s Disney+ shows have struggled to break through with Emmy voters despite strong viewership numbers.

Abdul-Mateen’s nomination signals that Marvel’s shift toward more prestige-oriented storytelling is paying off. With Wonder Man earning both critical acclaim and awards recognition, the MCU’s streaming future looks brighter than ever.
