Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Is the Summer Blockbuster That Could Redefine 2026 Cinema

Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Arrives This July — Here's Why It's the Must-See Film of 2026

Christopher Nolan doesn't do small. After Oppenheimer swept the Oscars and grossed nearly $1 billion, the director is back with The Odyssey — a sweeping adaptation of Homer's epic poem that's hitting theaters in July 2026. And based on everything we're hearing, it's going to be enormous.

The Cast Is Ridiculous

Nolan has assembled what might be the most stacked ensemble of the decade:

  • Matt Damon as Odysseus — his third Nolan collaboration after Interstellar and Oppenheimer
  • Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus's son — fresh off Spider-Man: Brand New Day
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Athena, the goddess who guides Odysseus
  • Robert Pattinson in an undisclosed role, reuniting with Nolan after Tenet
  • Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and Anne Hathaway round out the ensemble

What to Expect

Nolan shot The Odyssey on IMAX 70mm film across Greece, Morocco, and the UK. Early reports suggest the Cyclops sequence alone cost $40 million to film. The director has described it as "the most ambitious thing I've attempted" — and this is the man who blew up a stadium in The Dark Knight Rises and recreated a nuclear detonation without CGI.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day already crossing $228 million and The Invite earning 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, Summer 2026 has been strong. But The Odyssey is the event film — the kind of theatrical experience Nolan has spent his career championing. If you're planning to see one movie in IMAX this year, make it this one.
