Avatar: Fire and Ash and the 6 Best Action Movies of 2026 So Far — Ranked
From Pandora to Gotham — 2026's Action Slate Is Absolutely Cooking
We're officially past the halfway mark of 2026, and action fans have been eating well. From James Cameron returning to Pandora to superhero reboots and original sci-fi thrillers, this year has delivered some genuinely spectacular set pieces. Here's our ranked list of the six best action movies of 2026 so far.
The Top Tier: Avatar, Nolan, and Spider-Man
#1: Avatar: Fire and Ash — James Cameron's third Avatar installment proved that Pandora still has stories worth telling. The Sully family faces a new volcanic threat, and the visual effects are, predictably, on another planet. The underwater sequences alone justify the IMAX ticket. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña deliver emotionally grounded performances beneath the spectacle, and the film's box office run pushed it past $2 billion globally before landing on Disney+ in June.
#2: The Odyssey — Christopher Nolan's IMAX epic starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland reimagines Homer's classic as a visceral war-and-survival story. The 45-minute open-ocean storm sequence is being called the most ambitious practical effects achievement in cinema history. It's less a movie and more an endurance event — in the best way.
#3: Spider-Man: Brand New Day — Tom Holland's return to the web (in theaters July 11) brings Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi) into the director's chair. With Michael Mando as Crime Master and Lashana Lynch as Tombstone, this is street-level Spider-Man at its most intense.
Great But Not Perfect: The Honorable Mentions
#4: Masters of the Universe — Released in June, this long-gestating reboot from Amazon MGM Studios finally brought He-Man to the big screen. Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings, Bumblebee) directed, and while the script had pacing issues, the action choreography and Eternia world-building were top-notch.
#5: Project Hail Mary — Not a traditional action movie, but Ryan Gosling's space survival thriller has enough tension and set-piece energy to qualify. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, it's the thinking person's action film of 2026.
#6: Doomsday — The DC Elseworlds project starring Robert Pattinson as a darker, more unhinged character than his Batman turn. divisive among critics but the action community has embraced its unhinged energy and practical stunt work.
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey both dropping in July, this list could easily reshuffle by August. But for now, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the strongest action movie years in recent memory.
