Little House on the Prairie: Netflix's Gorgeous Reboot Brings the Ingalls Family to a New Generation
The Ingalls family is back, and they've never looked better. Netflix's reboot of Little House on the Prairie premieres July 9, 2026, and it's already generating serious buzz as one of the most anticipated dramas of the summer. With a stunning cast, lavish production values, and a deep respect for the source material, this isn't your grandmother's prairie show.
A Fresh Take on a Timeless Classic
Developed by Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys, The Vampire Diaries), the new series adapts Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved novels for a modern audience. Alice Halsey stars as young Laura, with Luke Bracey (Hacksaw Ridge) as Charles "Pa" Ingalls and Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline "Ma" Ingalls.
Sonnenshine, who grew up reading the books "like a million times," told Entertainment Weekly that she wanted to capture the authenticity of frontier life while expanding the perspective beyond Laura's point of view. "My mom and dad were very much like Ma and Pa," she shared. "We raised sheep and chickens and ducks, my mom sewed all my clothes."
Why This Reboot Works
Unlike the 1974-1983 NBC series starring Michael Landon, Netflix's version takes a more grounded, cinematic approach. The pilot was shot on location in Alberta, Canada, with sweeping cinematography that captures both the beauty and harshness of 19th-century American frontier life. The show doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of the books either — including poverty, illness, and the treatment of Native Americans.
The supporting cast features Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls, and Kate Burton in a recurring role. Netflix has already renewed the show for Season 2, signaling strong confidence in the project.
A Perfect Summer Watch
If you loved Yellowstone, When Calls the Heart, or the original Little House series, this reboot is essential viewing. It's comfort TV with substance — the kind of show that makes you want to curl up with a blanket and a cup of coffee. July 9 can't come soon enough.
