Cape Fear on Apple TV+: Amy Adams and Javier Bardem Reimagine a Thriller Classic — Everything We Know

Cape Fear 2026 series on Apple TV+ starring Amy Adams and Javier Bardem

Cape Fear Returns — But This Time, the Threat Hits Different

If you grew up watching Martin Scorsese 1991 Cape Fear remake with Robert De Niro terrorizing a family, you know the premise: a dangerous ex-con stalks the people who put him behind bars. Apple TV+ is bringing that story back — only this time, it is a 10-episode psychological thriller series, and Amy Adams is no longer just trying to survive. She is the one who made the call that sent Max Cady to prison.

Created by Nick Antosca (the mind behind The Act and Candy) and executive produced by both Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, Cape Fear drops on June 5, 2026 on Apple TV+ with two episodes premiering together. New episodes roll out every Friday through July 31.

The Story: A Lawyer Past Comes Knocking

Amy Adams plays Anna Bowden, a sharp attorney whose professional decision years ago — entering a guilty plea for Max Cady — lands her in the crosshairs when he is released from prison. Her husband, Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson), is equally caught in the spiral as Cady obsession moves from courtroom vengeance to something far more personal and invasive.

Javier Bardem takes on the iconic role previously played by Robert Mitchum (1962) and Robert De Niro (1991). But this is not a one-note villain. Bardem Cady is described as threatening, seductive, ambiguous, and even sympathetic at times — a man who is in pain, as Bardem himself put it in interviews. That complexity is what makes this version worth watching.

The supporting cast rounds out with CCH Pounder, adding another layer of gravitas to a series that clearly is not phoning it in.

What Makes This Version Stand Out

The original Cape Fear — based on John D. MacDonald 1957 novel The Executioners — always had the wife on the receiving end of the threat. Apple version flips that script. Anna Bowden is not a passive victim; her own guilt, professional ambition, and past choices are the engine driving the entire narrative. The Guardian praised Adams performance as incredible and described the uneasy, almost magnetic dynamic between Adams and Bardem as one of the show core strengths.

The direction is handled by a heavy-hitting team: Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), S.J. Clarkson (The Boys), Amanda Marsalis, and Reed Morano. With Scorsese and Spielberg as executive producers, the show has a direct lineage to the 1991 film Scorsese directed and Spielberg produced — giving it legitimacy beyond just borrowing a title.

Whether Cape Fear earns a second season or stands as a self-contained limited series, it is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about thrillers of summer 2026. If True Detective Season 1 taught us anything, it is that a star-driven anthology can dominate the cultural conversation — and this cast has that kind of firepower.
