Spider-Man: Brand New Day Nears $1 Billion Domestic as September Brings Resident Evil, Practical Magic 2, and More

Summer isn't done yet — and neither is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The Tom Holland-led Marvel epic is absolutely dominating the box office, pulling in $39 million in its fourth weekend and pushing its domestic total to a staggering $855 million. Worldwide, it's sitting at $2.22 billion, placing it as the third-highest-grossing film of all time, behind only Avatar ($2.9B) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7B). And yes — it's on track to eventually dethrone Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936M) as the biggest domestic earner ever.

But while Spidey continues to swing through records, September is shaping up to be a stacked month for moviegoers. Here's what's coming.

1. Resident Evil (September 18)

Directed by Zach Cregger (the mastermind behind last year's Weapons) and starring Austin Abrams, this reboot promises a return to the franchise's horror roots. Forget the Milla Jovovich action spectacles — this is Raccoon City at its freakiest, with zombies, betrayal, and Umbrella Corporation conspiracies done right. Tickets are already flying off the shelves.

2. Avengers: Endgame Encore (September 25)

Marvel is re-releasing the 2019 blockbuster with four minutes of new footage, a fresh introduction, and a brand-new end-credits scene that reportedly connects directly to Avengers: Doomsday. 3. Primetime (September 25)

4. Practical Magic 2 (September 10)

Nearly 30 years after the original, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are back as Sally and Gillian Owens. This time, the sisters head to the UK to break the family curse as Sally's daughter (played by Joey King) develops her own magical abilities. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest also return as the iconic aunts. The cult following around the first film is real, and the hype is palpable.

5. Hope (September 9)

South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin (The Chaser, The Wailing) returns with this dark sci-fi horror set in a remote village where police and hunters track a mysterious creature terrorizing locals. If you're a fan of elevated Korean genre cinema, this is the one to watch.

This Weekend's Box Office

Meanwhile, Insidious: Out of the Further launched to $25.3 million domestically ($60M global) — a solid debut for the Blumhouse franchise, especially on its $18 million budget. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey continues its remarkable run at No. 3 with $19.5 million in its sixth weekend, now at $539 million domestic and $1.44 billion worldwide — making it the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.

On the flip side, Jason Statham's Mutiny disappointed with a $7.5M opening against its $40M budget, while the ensemble comedy Spa Weekend (featuring Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris, and Michelle Buteau) crashed hard at No. 9 with just $3.05 million.
