Practical Magic 2 Casts a $30M Spell: Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman End Spider-Man's Box Office Reign

After six straight weeks of web-slinging dominance, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has finally been knocked off the top of the domestic box office — and it took a little witchcraft to do it. Practical Magic 2, the long-awaited sequel starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, conjured an estimated $30 million opening weekend to claim the No. 1 spot, according to weekend estimates reported by Rotten Tomatoes.

The original Practical Magic was far from a hit back in 1998. Made for a reported $60–75 million, the Warner Bros. romantic fantasy opened to just $13.1 million and finished with $46.6 million domestically. Nearly three decades later, nostalgia proved far more powerful than anyone expected, as millennial fans who grew up quoting the Owens sisters turned out in force.

A Career Milestone for Bullock and Kidman

For Bullock, the $30 million debut continues a remarkable late-career hot streak. If estimates hold, it marks her fifth consecutive $30 million-plus opening, following The Lost City ($30.4 million), Ocean's 8, The Heat, and Gravity — her biggest grosser to date. Since winning the Oscar for The Blind Side in 2009, Bullock has headlined only a handful of films, but nearly all of them have crossed $100 million domestically. Practical Magic 2 could become her tenth $100 million grosser if it shows the same legs as The Lost City, which finished at $105.3 million.

For Kidman, the opening is even more significant. Practical Magic 2 is now her biggest opening ever as a lead or co-lead, topping the $22.8 million debut of 2005's The Interpreter opposite Sean Penn. Despite an extraordinary career spanning The Others, Cold Mountain, Batman Forever, the Aquaman films, and Just Go With It, Kidman has never headlined a $100 million domestic grosser — The Others ($96.5 million) and Cold Mountain ($95.6 million) came closest. This sequel could finally break that streak.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Nears All-Time Record

Do not feel too bad for Peter Parker, though. Spider-Man: Brand New Day added another $8.4 million in its seventh weekend, pushing its domestic total to $935.1 million — just days away from passing Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6 million) as the highest-grossing domestic release of all time. Globally, the film now stands at a staggering $2.452 billion, and the 11-film Spider-Man franchise has collectively grossed over $11.3 billion worldwide.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey crossed $600 million domestic this weekend, becoming only the 18th film ever to do so and officially Universal Pictures' highest-grossing film of all time with $1.684 billion globally. Family favorite Coyote vs. Acme also continues its feel-good run, climbing to $47.7 million and closing in on the $50 million price tag Ketchup Entertainment paid Warner Bros. to rescue it from cancellation.

What This Means for Fall 2026

Hollywood loves a comeback story, and Practical Magic 2 is exactly that — proof that legacy sequels aimed squarely at millennial women can still open big when the casting is right. With Resident Evil, Bad Apples, and Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom all hitting theaters on September 18, the fall box office race is just heating up. But for one magical weekend, the Owens sisters ruled them all.
