The Epic Sci-Fi Trilogy Is Officially Complete

Denis Villeneuve finally made good on his promise. At D23 Expo 2025 in Anaheim, California — one of Disney's biggest annual events — the legendary filmmaker took the stage and confirmed what fans have been desperate to hear: Dune: Part Three has been officially greenlit and is now in pre-production.

Villeneuve confirmed that Part Three will adapt Dune Messiah — the controversial second novel written by Frank Herbert back in 1969. Unlike the first two films, which closely followed their source material, Messiah explores darker territory. Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) has become Emperor, but power has corrupted everything he once fought for. The story follows an older Paul trapped by his own messianic destiny, dealing with the consequences of jihad waged in his name across known space.

Rebecca Ferguson returns as Lady Jessica, and Javier Bardem continues as Stilgar. New cast additions include Josh Brolin in expanded role and Bella Ramsey bringing fresh energy to key supporting characters. According to Villeneuve, the film aims to conclude the original trilogy properly, giving Paul Atreides a complete arc from beginning to end.

Production Timeline

Filming is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027, using practical effects and IMAX production methods similar to previous installments. PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and Warner Bros. are co-financing, while Villeneuve returns as both director and co-writer alongside co-writer Jon Spaihts.

The director revealed during D23 that he already wrote several pages of the screenplay during post-production of Part Two, knowing full well how massively successful the film would be. That preparation gives the project a head start that few franchises ever enjoy.
