Hollywood is officially back in the billion-dollar business. The 2026 domestic box office has soared past the $7 billion mark, according to Rentrak — putting the industry on pace for its best year since the pandemic. That's a staggering 20% jump over the same period in 2025, and while it's still 7% behind 2019's pre-pandemic peak of $7.6 billion, the trajectory is unmistakably upward.

If this pace holds through December, the industry could finish the year at roughly $10.6 billion. The best post-COVID year was 2023 at $9 billion, so we're talking about a genuine renaissance.

The Films Driving the Comeback

Let's talk about the heavy hitters. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is projected to become the second-highest-grossing domestic film of all time, overtaking Avengers: Endgame's $583.3 million. That's a jaw-dropping achievement for any franchise, let alone one that's been going this strong for two decades.

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has pulled in $539 million domestically — making it the highest-grossing title of the director's career, surpassing even Oppenheimer. Pixar's Toy Story 5 has collected $478 million, proving the studio still has magic left. And Nintendo continued its box office dominance with the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, crossing $429.8 million.

Other standout performers include Lionsgate's Michael ($372.3 million, the studio's highest-grossing film ever), Amazon's Project Hail Mary ($344 million), Focus Features' Obsession ($263.4 million, the label's all-time record), and A24's Backrooms ($197.5 million, another record-breaker for the indie studio).

Fall 2026 Could Push It Even Further

The fall slate isn't done yet. Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot is expected to perform strongly, while DC's Clayface offers a lower-budget comic book entry. And at Christmas, Warner/Legendary's Dune: Part Three and Disney/Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday are poised to send the box office into the stratosphere.

Summer alone stands at $4.4 billion, up 26% from last year and just 2% behind the all-time summer record of $4.755 billion set in 2013. With Jacob Elordi's The Dog Stars, Coyote vs. Acme, and Mark Wahlberg's By Any Means arriving over Labor Day weekend, that record is very much in play.
