The Batman Part II Moves to 2028 — First Footage of Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight Is Here

Warner Bros. just dropped the news Batman fans have been waiting years to hear — and it comes with the first real look at Robert Pattinson back in the cape. Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II has officially moved to February 18, 2028, nearly six years after the 2022 original hit theaters. To soften the blow, Reeves unveiled the first camera test footage of Pattinson's Dark Knight on Vimeo, and the internet hasn't stopped talking about it since.

The new date is the sequel's second delay. It was originally set for October 2, 2026, then pushed to October 1, 2027, before landing in early 2028. Reeves reportedly needs the extra time for post-production on what's shaping up to be one of the most anticipated comic-book movies of the decade. DC Studios co-chief James Gunn defended the wait on Threads, pointing out that long gaps between sequels are Hollywood tradition: seven years between Alien and Aliens, seven between the first two Terminator films, and 36 between the Top Gun movies.

The cast is what makes this one feel special. Joining Pattinson are Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan, along with Game of Thrones veteran Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch. Reeves co-wrote the script with Mattson Tomlin, the same duo behind the first film. Plot details are still locked in the Batcave, and the studio isn't revealing who plays what — but the mystery is half the fun.

For Millennials who grew up on The Dark Knight trilogy, the Reeves-verse has become the thinking person's superhero saga — a moody, noir take on Gotham that trades spectacle for detective work. The camera test footage, though brief, suggests Pattinson's Bruce Wayne is even more battered and brooding this time around, with a Gotham that looks rain-soaked, gothic, and dangerous in all the right ways.

The delay also triggered a domino effect across Warner Bros.' slate. J.J. Abrams' mysterious new film The Great Beyond, starring Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega, slides from November 13, 2026 to October 1, 2027 — the date The Batman Part II used to hold. Abrams' project, described as a "four-quadrant, all-audience spectacle" with an IMAX 70mm rollout, benefits from the extra time to print those massive film reels. Sam Esmail's Panic Carefully, starring Julia Roberts, moves to April 9, 2027.

While waiting until 2028 stings, the silver lining is that Reeves gets to finish the movie on his own terms. After the critical and commercial success of The Batman — which grossed over $770 million worldwide and launched the hit HBO series The Penguin with Colin Farrell — Warner Bros. knows this franchise is worth the patience. The Batman Part II will face off against a packed 2028 calendar, but if the first footage is any indication, the Caped Crusader is ready to own it.
