Johnny Depp Is Back After 8 Years — As Scrooge in Ti West's Gothic 'Ebenezer'

Johnny Depp transformed into Ebenezer Scrooge on the London set of Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol

Johnny Depp's Big Comeback Is Here — He's Playing Scrooge in Ti West's 'Ebenezer'

Eight years away from a major Hollywood studio film is a long time, but Johnny Depp is officially back — and honestly, nobody saw this one coming. The actor is starring as Ebenezer Scrooge in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, a gothic dark fantasy reimagining of Charles Dickens' classic novella, hitting theaters on November 13, 2026 via Paramount Pictures.

The first trailer dropped in late July, and it's... a lot. Think fog-drenched Victorian London, chained ghosts, and Depp buried under layers of prosthetics looking genuinely unrecognizable. This isn't your grandma's cozy Christmas movie.

Ti West Is Directing — Yes, THAT Ti West

The wildest part of this whole project? It's helmed by Ti West, the horror auteur behind the X trilogy (X, Pearl, and MaXXXine). The guy who made Mia Goth a scream queen is now tackling Dickens, with a screenplay from Nathaniel Halpern (Tales from the Loop).

Paramount is billing it as "a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens' London," following Scrooge's supernatural journey through his past, present, and future as he fights for a second chance at redemption. So basically the original story — but with the dread turned up to eleven. Given West's track record with slow-burn atmosphere, this could be the first A Christmas Carol adaptation that actually feels scary again.

The Cast Is Low-Key Stacked

Beyond Depp, the supporting lineup reads like a fantasy fan's dream:

  • Ian McKellen — because every prestige ghost story needs Gandalf
  • Daisy Ridley post-Star Wars, keeping her post-franchise streak alive
  • Rupert Grint, forever our Ron Weasley, bringing the wizarding vibes back
  • Andrea Riseborough, one of the most underrated actors working today
  • Tramell Tillman, fresh off stealing scenes in Severance
  • Plus Sam Claflin and Arthur Conti

Not bad for a Christmas movie, right?

Fair warning though: the marketing hasn't been all smooth. Fans online roasted the official tagline — "The name you know, the story you don't" — with some calling it hilariously obvious, since literally everyone knows the story of Scrooge. Ouch.

Still, there's real curiosity here. Depp's last few years have been defined by courtrooms rather than box offices, and this is his highest-profile studio role since Fantastic Beasts. If the film lands, it could mark one of the great comebacks — right in time for the holidays.

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol opens exclusively in theaters on November 13, 2026. Will you be watching? Or does Scrooge need to stay in retirement?
