Dolly Parton's 'Steel Magnolias' and 'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' Are Coming Back to AMC Theatres

Dolly's Back on the Big Screen, and AMC Is Making It Happen

If you needed an excuse to finally revisit a classic (or cry your eyes out on a Tuesday afternoon), here it is. Following the passing of the legendary Dolly Parton, AMC Theatres is honoring the country icon with a limited re-release of two of her most beloved films — and the celebration kicks off right now.

Starting August 28 through September 2, two of Parton's most iconic movies — the 1989 dramedy Steel Magnolias and the 1982 musical comedy The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas — will screen at roughly 200 AMC locations across the U.S., including theaters throughout her home state of Tennessee. Participating cinemas will run two matinee showings daily, featuring one of each title, at AMC's discounted Fan Faves pricing.

Why These Two Movies Matter

Both films are perfect snapshots of Parton's range. In Steel Magnolias, she plays Truvy Jones, the wise-beauty-operator owner of a Louisiana hair salon. She anchors a jaw-dropping ensemble that includes Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, and Daryl Hannah — a group of Southern women who weather life's storms together in a story that remains one of the most replayed tearjerkers of all time.

In The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Parton earned a Golden Globe nomination playing Miss Mona, the beloved proprietor of the Chicken Ranch brothel targeted by a televangelist's moral crusade — opposite Burt Reynolds as her secret-lover sheriff. It's also the film where she performs “I Will Always Love You,” years before Whitney Houston turned it into a global smash for The Bodyguard.

Parton made her film debut in 1980's 9 to 5 alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, a role that earned her both a Golden Globe nomination for acting and an Oscar nod for the title track.
