The East Palace: Nam Joo-hyuk Leads Netflix's Most Ambitious Historical K-Drama of 2026

The East Palace K-drama Nam Joo-hyuk

Netflix's Crown Jewel of Historical K-Dramas

If you loved Kingdom, Mr. Queen, and Alchemy of Souls, get ready for your next obsession. The East Palace (동궁), Netflix's latest historical fantasy K-drama, stars Nam Joo-hyuk in his most commanding role yet — and it's already generating massive buzz ahead of its July 2026 premiere.

Nam Joo-hyuk, fresh off his acclaimed performances in Twenty-Five Twenty-One and Vigilante, plays Crown Prince Lee Hyun, a brilliant but cursed royal who discovers that the palace's eastern wing is a gateway between the living world and the spirit realm. Tasked with protecting the kingdom from supernatural threats while navigating deadly court politics, his character is part warrior, part detective, and entirely compelling.

Why The East Palace Stands Out

The production value is insane. Netflix reportedly poured over ₩40 billion (roughly $30 million) into this 16-episode series, making it one of the most expensive K-dramas ever produced. The sets are breathtaking — a faithful recreation of Joseon-era palace architecture with a supernatural twist. The CGI for the spirit realm sequences rivals big-budget Hollywood films.

The supporting cast is equally impressive. Kim Tae-ri (The Handmaiden, Twenty-Five Twenty-One) plays the enigmatic shaman who becomes the Crown Prince's reluctant ally. Yoo Yeon-seok (Hospital Playlist) portrays the scheming Chief State Councilor who may or may not be in league with the spirits. And Han So-hee (My Name, Gyeongseong Creature) appears as a mysterious woman who seems to exist in both worlds simultaneously.

July 2026 Is Packed for K-Drama Fans

The East Palace isn't the only K-drama dropping this month. Love in Sync starring Kim Myung-soo and Kang Min-ah offers a breezy rom-com palette cleanser. Dream to You with Hwang In Youp and Hyeri brings the romance. See You at Work Tomorrow! starring Seo In-guk and Park Ji-hyun delivers a workplace comedy. And A Shop for Killers Season 2 is returning with more action-packed thrills.

But for those craving epic storytelling, gorgeous visuals, and a story that blends history with fantasy, The East Palace is the one to watch. Premiering July 18 on Netflix.
