Taylor Swift Goes Country for Toy Story 5 — 'I Knew It, I Knew You' Puts Jessie in the Spotlight

Taylor Swift Returns to Her Country Roots for Pixar's Toy Story 5
Taylor Swift just dropped something that feels like a warm hug from your childhood — and it's tied to one of the biggest animated movies of 2026. On Friday, the singer released "I Knew It, I Knew You," a brand-new original song written specifically for Toy Story 5, and the accompanying music video is all about everyone's favorite cowgirl: Jessie, voiced by the legendary Joan Cusack.
The track harkens straight back to Swift's country roots, a welcome departure from the pop-heavy sound she's explored over her last several albums. And honestly? It fits Toy Story perfectly. The franchise has always thrived on that homespun, Americana energy — think Randy Newman's iconic "You've Got a Friend in Me" — and Swift's new song slots right into that sonic universe.
A Childhood Connection to Toy Story
Swift didn't just write the song — she made it deeply personal. On Thursday, she shared a childhood home video of herself dressed as a cowgirl, looking strikingly similar to Joan Cusack's Jessie from Toy Story 2. Along with the video, Swift posted a heartfelt message on Instagram about what writing for the character meant to her.
"Writing this song felt like a musical departure and coming home at the same time," she wrote. "Creating something for Jessie was a new challenge and also felt like second nature all at once. And being a 'Toy Story' kid from the age of 5 til now… is an adventure I plan to be on, to infinity and beyond." She also thanked Andrew Stanton — the director of Toy Story 5 and a Pixar veteran who's been part of every film in the franchise — for imagining her in this role years ago.
Toy Story 5: The Buzzes, Jessie, and a New Villain
The film itself sounds wild. Director Andrew Stanton revealed that the opening sequence features a cargo container of next-generation Buzz Lightyears washing ashore on a deserted island — an idea inspired by a real 1992 news story about 28,800 rubber ducks lost at sea. Yes, there are 50 Buzz Lightyears in this movie.
Meanwhile, Jessie's storyline revolves around her attempts to protect Bonnie from a new tablet called Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee of Past Lives fame. The two narratives — the Buzzes on their separate journey and Jessie fighting for Bonnie's attention — eventually converge in what Stanton describes as a seamless, emotionally satisfying climax.
Swift also made sure to acknowledge Randy Newman's legacy: "Thank you to the incomparable Randy Newman for the gorgeous sonic tapestry of songs and scores you've meticulously woven over the years. You created the 'Toy Story' musical world, and we are lucky to get to live in it." That's the kind of respect for franchise history that makes you even more excited for the movie.
When Does Toy Story 5 Hit Theaters?
