Spider-Man: Brand New Day Won't Hit IMAX Screens in India

If you're an Indian Marvel fan who was planning to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day on the biggest screen possible, you've got some disappointing news to process. Sony Pictures has confirmed that the Tom Holland and Zendaya-starring film will not get an IMAX release in India — and there's a pretty surprising reason behind it.

Sony's official statement on X read: "No IMAX release for Spider-Man: Brand New Day in India, but the film will be available in premium large-format (PLF) screens for an epic big-screen experience." While PLF screens are nothing to sneeze at, it's still a letdown for fans who had their hearts set on that signature IMAX experience.

Why Is Spider-Man Missing IMAX? Enter Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey

Here's where it gets interesting — and a little ironic. The reason Spider-Man: Brand New Day can't secure IMAX screens in India is because Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has locked in an exclusive IMAX run from July 17 to August 14, 2026. And guess what? Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to release on July 31, 2026 — right in the middle of that exclusive window.

Shot entirely using IMAX cameras, The Odyssey is expected to dominate IMAX screens across multiple territories, including India. The advance bookings for IMAX 70mm screenings reportedly sold out within hours due to overwhelming demand.

But here's the twist that nobody saw coming: Tom Holland and Zendaya are also in The Odyssey. So the same two leads are essentially competing against themselves for IMAX screen time. That's Hollywood for you.

IMAX 2026 Is Packed — And Spider-Man Isn't the Only One Missing Out

To be fair, the 2026 IMAX calendar is stacked. It kicked off with Mercy in January, followed by The Bride! and Project Hail Mary (starring Ryan Gosling) in March, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael in April. Summer brought Mortal Kombat II, The Mandalorian and Grogu, Toy Story 5, Supergirl, and Minions 3. Ranbir Kapoor's Ramayana: Part 1 is also slated for an IMAX experience.

With that many blockbusters fighting for limited IMAX screens, some films inevitably have to step aside. But fans weren't happy about it, flooding social media with complaints like "That's not fair man" and expressing disappointment about missing out on the bigger screen experience.

For now, Indian audiences will have to settle for premium large-format screens when Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31. It won't be IMAX, but at least it'll still be a step up from standard screens. And hey — if you really need that IMAX fix, The Odyssey is just two weeks away.
