Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Eyes $80M-$100M Opening — Why This IMAX Epic Is 2026's Biggest Gamble

Christopher Nolan doesn't do small. After Oppenheimer swept the Oscars and grossed nearly $1 billion, the director could've played it safe. Instead, he went back 2,800 years and decided to film Homer's The Odyssey entirely in IMAX. That's not a creative choice — that's a statement.
The $100M Question
Universal Pictures is projecting an opening weekend between $80 million and $100 million when The Odyssey hits North American theaters on July 17, 2026. That's an enormous range, and honestly, nobody knows which end it'll land on. Nolan's name alone guarantees a certain floor, but a 2,800-year-old Greek poem isn't exactly IP-driven entertainment.
The cast, though? Stacked. Matt Damon leads as Odysseus, supported by Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. Michael Caine also appears in what Nolan has called a "controversial" role — a detail that has Classics Twitter absolutely unhinged.
IMAX or Nothing
Nolan shot the entire film across six countries using IMAX cameras, with sequences also formatted for 70mm and 35mm. He recently admitted he didn't feel confident the project would work until halfway through production. "It was only then that I felt I could pull it off," he told The New York Times.
This isn't just a movie — it's an event. Universal has skipped influencer screenings entirely, opting for a critics-only premiere. In an era where every studio is courting TikTok, that's a bold move. But Nolan has always trusted the work to speak for itself.
What It Means for Summer 2026
The Odyssey arrives in a stacked July that includes Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31) and follows Toy Story 5's record-breaking $160 million opening. The summer box office is already on fire, and Nolan's epic could be the accelerant — or the first major stumble of the season.
Either way, you're going to want to see this one in IMAX. Nolan wouldn't have it any other way.
