Project Hail Mary Finally Lands on Streaming — And It's Already Breaking Records

If you missed Project Hail Mary in theaters, you're in luck — the Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi epic from director Phil Lord and Christopher Miller has officially landed on streaming platforms, and it's already dominating the digital charts. After raking in over $655 million worldwide, the MGM/Amazon Studios production is now the second-highest-grossing film of 2026, sitting just behind the juggernaut The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

But here's the wildest part: the film is actually beating Avatar 3 on digital rental platforms right now, according to recent streaming charts. That's no small feat when you're competing against James Cameron's latest spectacle.

Why Project Hail Mary Is Worth the Watch

Adapted from Andy Weir's bestselling novel (the same author behind The Martian), Project Hail Mary follows astronaut Ryland Grace (Gosling), who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there — only to discover he's humanity's last hope against an alien threat that's slowly dimming the sun. Gosling delivers one of his most grounded, emotionally resonant performances, carrying much of the film as a near-solo act for the first half.

The film also features standout supporting turns from Ethan Hawke as a ground-based mission commander and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as a key scientist whose research becomes central to the plot. The visual effects team, led by supervisor Andrew R. Jones, crafted a deeply immersive deep-space environment that makes you feel the isolation and wonder of interstellar travel.

Lord and Miller — the duo behind The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — brought their signature blend of heart, humor, and kinetic energy to a genre that desperately needed a fresh take. The result is a film that's as emotionally gripping as Interstellar but with the propulsive momentum of a Michael Bay thriller.

Where and How to Watch

Project Hail Mary is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video for subscribers, and it's also available for digital rental on Apple TV, Vudu, Google Play, and YouTube Movies. The theatrical run isn't entirely over either — select IMAX screenings are still playing in major cities, and given the film was shot with IMAX cameras in mind, it's arguably still the best way to experience it.

With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie heading toward its own home release this summer and Avengers: Doomsday looming in December, 2026 is shaping up to be a wild year for blockbusters. But Project Hail Mary has already carved out its place as the year's most thoughtful, crowd-pleasing sci-fi event. Don't sleep on it — literally, the movie's about a guy who does that already.
