Heart of the Beast Hits Theaters September 25 — Brad Pitt and David Ayer Deliver Fall's Wildest Survival Thriller

Brad Pitt is heading into the Alaskan wilderness — and he is bringing man's best friend with him. Heart of the Beast, the new survival thriller from David Ayer, storms into theaters on September 25, 2026 via Paramount Pictures, and the trailer alone has millennials buzzing.
Pitt plays James Belmont, a former Army Special Forces officer whose plane goes down in the unforgiving Alaskan backcountry. Stranded with freezing temperatures closing in, his only companion is Odin, a retired combat dog played by a German Shepherd named Uber. Together, the two must fight the cold, the terrain, and their own demons to make it home alive.
A Black List Script, a Fury Director, and a Movie-Star-and-Dog Duo
The screenplay by Cameron Alexander first landed on Hollywood's coveted Black List back in 2017 as one of the year's most-liked unproduced scripts. Nearly a decade later, Ayer — the filmmaker behind Fury, End of Watch, and Suicide Squad — finally brings it to life with cinematographer Mauro Fiore (Avatar) capturing the brutal beauty of the wilderness.
The supporting cast includes Oscar winner J.K. Simmons and rising star Anna Lambe (True Detective: Night Country). Behind the camera, the producing team is stacked: Damien Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton produce through their Wild Chickens Productions banner alongside Pitt's own Plan B Entertainment and Temple Hill Entertainment.
Why Millennials Should Care
Survival thrillers with heart — think The Revenant meets John Wick: Chapter 3's dog devotion — are catnip for the 25-40 crowd, and early trailer reactions praise the raw bond between Belmont and Odin. Pitt, fresh off F1 breaking out as one of summer 2026's biggest hits, is on a late-career hot streak, while Ayer returns to the grounded, gritty storytelling that made End of Watch a cult favorite.
With Practical Magic 2 conjuring nostalgia, Resident Evil's horror reboot dropping September 18, and Heart of the Beast closing out the month on September 25, this September might be the most stacked moviegoing month of the fall. Grab your tickets — and maybe hug your dog a little tighter afterward.
Heart of the Beast releases in theaters September 25, 2026, distributed by Paramount Pictures. Runtime: 101 minutes.
