Robert Downey Jr. Is Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday — And the MCU Will Never Be the Same
Robert Downey Jr. Is Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday — And the MCU Will Never Be the Same
In what might be the most shocking casting twist in Marvel history, Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU — not as Tony Stark, but as Victor von Doom, the infamous villain of the Fantastic Four. Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026, and the internet has not been this unhinged since the original Avengers lineup was announced.
Back to Save the Multiverse — Again
After Avengers: Endgame wrapped up the Infinity Saga in 2019, fans wondered if the MCU could ever reach those heights again. Well, the Russo brothers — Anthony and Joe Russo — are back in the director's chairs, and they are bringing literally everyone. The film unites the Avengers, Wakandans, New Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and — in the most shocking multiverse mashup ever — the X-Men. That is Patrick Stewart is Charles Xavier and Ian McKellen is Magneto sharing screen time with Chris Hemsworth as Thor. The Russo brothers are not playing it safe. The screenplay comes from Michael Waldron (creator of Loki) and Stephen McFeely, with the legendary Alan Silvestri composing the score. Kevin Feige is producing.
The Cast List Is Absurd
Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom, Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright (Shuri), David Harbour, Channing Tatum, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Tom Hiddleston (Loki), and Tenoch Huerta Mejia as Namor. This is essentially a crossover event spanning three decades of superhero cinema. After Jonathan Majors was dropped from the Kang role following legal issues in 2023, Marvel pivoted hard — bringing back RDJ as the new big bad is the kind of swing only Kevin Feige would attempt.
165 Minutes of Pure MCU Spectacle
The film runs approximately 165 minutes (just shy of Endgame is 181), with premium format showings driving ticket strategy. IMAX and Dolby Cinema are the obvious winners here. Avengers: Secret Wars is already slated for 2027, which means Doomsday is essentially the Infinity War of this new saga — the climax that everything has been building toward since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Whether it lives up to Endgame remains to be seen, but one thing is certain — Marvel is not playing it safe anymore.
Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18, 2026, in theaters worldwide.
