Toy Story 5 Is Almost Here: Tom Hanks, Bad Bunny, and a Smart Tablet Toy Are About to Ruin Everything

The Toys Are Back — And They're Facing Their Biggest Threat Yet

Pixar is pulling off the impossible once again. Toy Story 5 hits theaters on June 19, 2026, and it might just be the most ambitious entry in the franchise since the original. After Toy Story 4 wrapped things up so beautifully in 2019, nobody expected a fifth chapter — and yet here we are, with Tom Hanks and Tim Allen returning as Woody and Buzz Lightyear for what promises to be an emotional, hilarious, and surprisingly relevant ride.

Director Andrew Stanton and the Pixar team have cooked up something that tackles the one thing every toy fears: becoming obsolete. But instead of a dusty attic, the threat this time comes with Wi-Fi and a charging cable.

The New Cast That Nobody Saw Coming

The biggest curveball? Greta Lee (from Past Lives and Russian Doll) voices Lilypad, a high-tech frog-shaped smart tablet that essentially becomes the antagonist of the film. Think of her as the iPad that every kid wants more than their old stuffed animals — and she's not exactly thrilled about Woody and Buzz hanging around. Lee brings that sharp, slightly sarcastic energy that makes Lilypad feel like the most 2026 villain possible.

Then there's Bad Bunny — yes, the reggaeton superstar — making his voice acting debut as Pizza with Sunglasses (that's literally the character's name). The toy looks like a slice of pizza wearing shades, and if the early reviews are anything to go by, Bad Bunny absolutely nails the comedic timing. It's his first voice role, and it shows he's got serious range beyond music.

Alan Cumming joins as Woody's evil horse, adding a darkly comedic twist to one of the franchise's most iconic toy archetypes. And Joan Cusack returns as Jessie, because no Toy Story film would feel complete without her.

The Story: Bonnie's Growing Up, and the Toys Are Struggling

The plot follows the gang as their owner Bonnie — now a bit older — struggles to make friends in the real world. Lilypad, the smart tablet, complicates everything by offering instant digital entertainment that makes traditional toys feel like relics. It's a surprisingly sharp commentary on screen time vs. real play, delivered in classic Pixar fashion: wrapped in humor, hidden inside a children's movie.

Early trailers suggest Toy Story 5 is going to hit hard emotionally. The third new trailer dropped in late May, and fans are already calling it Pixar's most heartfelt work since Coco. The stakes feel personal — not just for the toys, but for anyone who grew up with them.

With a June 19 release, Toy Story 5 is positioning itself as the defining family film of summer 2026. Between the returning legacy cast, surprise additions like Bad Bunny, and a story that speaks directly to the millennial generation that grew up with Woody and Buzz, this one feels like a homecoming. Pixar, once again, reminds us why they invented the modern animated movie.
