Disclosure Day: Spielberg Returns to UFO Territory and It's Absolutely Riveting

When Steven Spielberg announced a new alien thriller, everyone immediately thought of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and War of the Worlds. With Disclosure Day, the legendary director has delivered a film that honors both — while pushing the genre into bold new territory for 2026.

The film follows a small-town journalist (played by Paul Mescal, bringing that Oscar-nominated intensity from Aftersun and Gladiator II) who stumbles upon a decades-old government cover-up involving a series of UFO sightings that mirror events from the 1947 Roswell incident. But this isn't just a conspiracy thriller — it's a meditation on truth, trust, and what happens when the government's biggest secret finally comes to light.

Why This Is Spielberg at His Best

At 79 years old, Spielberg hasn't lost a step. Disclosure Day is masterfully paced, with the first half building tension through grounded, almost documentary-style storytelling before escalating into the kind of awe-inspiring spectacle that only Spielberg can pull off. The cinematography, by frequent collaborator Janusz Kamiński, uses natural light and wide landscapes to create a sense of both wonder and isolation.

The supporting cast is equally impressive. Viola Davis plays a retired Air Force general who holds the key to the cover-up, bringing quiet authority to every scene she's in. Ke Huy Quan (still riding that Everything Everywhere All at Once energy) plays an amateur radio enthusiast whose hobby becomes the linchpin of the entire investigation.

How It Compares to Other 2026 Sci-Fi

While Project Hail Mary takes the emotional approach and Disclosure Day goes for grounded realism, both films prove that 2026 is a remarkable year for science fiction cinema. Other notable sci-fi releases this year include The Electric State on Netflix and the animated WALL-E sequel that Pixar has been keeping under wraps.

Disclosure Day is currently playing in theaters and has already generated serious awards buzz. If you only see one Spielberg movie this year (and let's be honest, you should see more than one), make it this one.

Now playing in theaters. Rating: 4/5 stars.
