The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Finally Here for Digital Viewing

If you missed The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during its massive theatrical run, your wait is finally over. Nintendo and Illumination's latest animated blockbuster just hit digital platforms on May 19, 2026, and it's currently sitting as the highest-grossing film of 2026 with over $830 million at the worldwide box office.

The film is available to rent for $24.99 or purchase for $29.99 on PVOD platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and Vudu. Digital buyers also get access to over an hour of behind-the-scenes bonus features, including commentary from directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

A Star-Studded Cast That Went Even Bigger

The sequel brought back Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi, but the real excitement came from the all-new cast additions. Brie Larson steps into the role of Rosalina, delivering a performance that fans have been calling charismatic and unexpectedly heartfelt. Donald Glover voices Yoshi with his signature comedic timing, and in one of the best-kept secrets of 2026, Glen Powell plays Star Fox (Fox McCloud) — a character Nintendo actively hid from all marketing until premiere night.

The plot follows the Mario Bros across the galaxy as they face new worlds, unexpected threats, and iconic Nintendo characters. It is stuffed with Easter eggs. IGN's review noted it racks up some extra lives by stuffing Easter eggs into the runtime to the point of bursting.

Physical Release, Streaming, and the Star Fox Connection

The 4K Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVD versions are confirmed for a June 16, 2026 release. There's even a limited edition 4K steelbook designed to look like Rosalina's Storybook — a must-have for collectors.

As for streaming: Peacock will be the first streaming home for the film, likely arriving later this summer. Following the precedent set by the original The Super Mario Bros Movie, the film is expected to move to Netflix after four months on Peacock.

The Star Fox reveal in this film also set up something even bigger — Nintendo announced a Star Fox remake for the Nintendo Switch 2 shortly after the movie premiered. If you're a fan of the film, that game is going to be essential.

How It Stacks Up Against 2026's Other Hits

While it didn't quite cross the elusive $1 billion milestone, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie still outperformed every other 2026 release so far. For comparison, Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling pulled in $655 million, and the long-awaited The Mandalorian and Grogu opened with a strong $12 million in Thursday previews. The Galaxy Movie's delayed digital release, originally set for May 5, was a calculated move to maximize theatrical revenue, and it clearly paid off.

Bottom line: Whether you're a die-hard Nintendo fan or just love a good animated adventure, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on digital is worth the rental — especially for those bonus features. And with a potential sequel and the Star Fox game already in the pipeline, this franchise is far from over. Wahoo!
