'Obsession' Is the Scariest Movie of 2026 — And It Came From a 20-Something Filmmaker's Bedroom
If you haven't seen Obsession yet, you're missing out on what might be the most disturbing horror film of 2026 so far. Directed by Gen Z filmmaker Curry Barker, this indie thriller has been racking up glowing reviews, dominating Rotten Tomatoes, and making audiences everywhere check under their beds.
What makes it even more impressive? Barker made his first major hit with virtually no Hollywood machinery behind him — and now he's already lined up a Texas Chainsaw Massacre film and another Jason Blum-produced project called Anything But Ghosts. Not bad for a guy in his twenties.
A Monkey's Paw for the Modern Dating Era
The premise is deceptively simple but absolutely chilling. Michael Johnston plays Bear, an insecure twentysomething who spends most of his time pining after his coworker Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette. When Bear makes a wish on a novelty toy called the "One Wish Willow" for Nikki to love him more than anyone in the world, things go sideways — fast.
It's essentially a modern take on the classic Monkey's Paw trope, applied to dating culture, obsession, and the toxicity of parasocial relationships. Barker uses practical effects — yes, actual makeup and duct tape — to create some genuinely unsettling imagery. According to a Polygon interview, Barker even recruited his own father to help with some of the scare sequences.
Why Critics Are Losing Their Minds
Variety called Obsession "clever and creepy," praising how it "gets maximal results from a minimal budget." The Hollywood Reporter said it's a "bracingly scary horror film that actually freshens up the formula." And Forbes noted that the film is dominating Rotten Tomatoes critic scores.
Special mention goes to Inde Navarrette, whose performance as Nikki has critics predicting she's about to become the next big horror scream queen. The way she transitions from normal coworker to something far more menacing is the kind of acting that stays with you long after the credits roll.
Produced by Jason Blum and Roy Lee through their Blumhouse and Vertigo Entertainment banners, Obsession proves that you don't need a massive budget to make genuinely terrifying cinema — just a talented young director with a vision and a willingness to get weird.
The Verdict
Obsession is the kind of horror movie that reminds you why the genre matters. It's not relying on cheap jump scares or CGI monsters — it's using psychological dread, practical effects, and a premise that hits uncomfortably close to home. If you're a horror fan in 2026, this one needs to be at the top of your watchlist.
And keep an eye on Curry Barker — between Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Anything But Ghosts, we haven't seen the last of him. Not even close.
