Insidious: Out of the Further Hits Digital — Here's Why the Sixth Film Might Be the Franchise's Scariest

The Further Gets Darker Than Ever
Just in time for Halloween season, Insidious: Out of the Further has arrived on digital platforms, bringing the long-running horror franchise to audiences who missed its theatrical run. And if you're a horror fan who's been sleeping on this one — wake up, because the sixth installment might genuinely be the scariest entry in the entire series.
Directed by Jeremy Slater (creator of Netflix's Moon Knight) and produced by franchise veterans James Wan and Jason Blum, the film introduces a new lead character: Gemma, played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (of Never Have I Ever fame), a college student who accidentally opens a doorway to the Further and brings something back that refuses to leave.
A Fresh Start With Familiar Terror
After Insidious: The Red Door (2023) wrapped up the Lambert family storyline, the franchise needed reinvention. Out of the Further delivers exactly that. Gone are the Lamberts. Instead, we follow Gemma and her roommate Dani (played by Amandla Stenberg) as they deal with increasingly violent supernatural events in their off-campus apartment. Lin Shaye returns in a limited but impactful role as Elise's spirit, connecting the new story to franchise lore.
The scares in this film are noticeably different from previous entries. Slater draws from J-horror influences, incorporating slow-burn dread alongside the franchise's signature jump scares. A sequence involving a mirror and a 360-degree camera rotation has already been dubbed "the scariest scene of 2026" by horror podcast Dead Meat.
Box Office Was Modest, But Streaming Could Be Huge
Theatrically, Out of the Further earned approximately $78 million worldwide against a modest $15 million budget — profitable, but below the franchise highs of the first two films. However, the Insidious series has always found its biggest audience on home viewing. Insidious: The Red Door was one of 2023's most-streamed horror films, and industry analysts expect Out of the Further to follow the same pattern.
The film is now available on Apple TV, Prime Video, and Vudu for digital purchase, with a streaming window expected to hit a major platform by late November. Whether you're binging horror for October or just looking for a genuinely effective scare, Insidious: Out of the Further deserves a spot on your watchlist.
Just maybe don't watch it alone. Seriously.
