Spooky Season Starts Early — Netflix's Halloween 2026 Slate Is Terrifying (In a Good Way)

Every year, Netflix rolls out its "Netflix and Chills" programming block, and every year it gets a little more ambitious. For Halloween 2026, the platform isn't messing around. Between Ryan Murphy's latest true-crime obsession, a creature feature starring Josh Hartnett, and a stacked lineup of returning horror favorites, this October might be Netflix's scariest month ever.

What's Already Dropped

Netflix got a head start on the spooky season with some early September releases. The Last House and The Whisper Man both landed as Netflix original films, each delivering different flavors of dread. On the series side, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen lives up to its ominous title as an anxiety-inducing limited series, while the UK psychological thriller Unchosen has been quietly gathering a cult following.

And for Stranger Things completionists, Tales from '85 — the spin-off series set in the same universe — dropped two full seasons, giving fans a fresh fix of Hawkins nostalgia while we wait for the Stranger Things finale.

The Main Events

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story (September 17) is Ryan Murphy's latest installment in his true-crime anthology franchise. After the massive success of the Dahmer and Menendez seasons, Murphy turns his lens on America's most infamous axe murder case. Expect the signature Murphy treatment: stylish cinematography, uncomfortable intimacy, and performances designed to haunt your dreams.

Below (October 8) pairs Josh Hartnett with Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton in a six-episode creature thriller set in a remote Newfoundland fishing community. Creator Jesse McKeown deliberately chose the rugged Canadian coastline as the setting, calling it "a dangerous landscape that doesn't need a monster to kill you." Add one anyway, though, and you've got appointment viewing.

Balaraw: Blood Island rounds out the originals with a Southeast Asian horror series that promises blood-soaked mythology and practical effects. Between these titles and the licensed horror catalog Netflix always expands in October, your watchlist is about to get very long — and very dark.
