Lanterns, the new DC Studios series based on the iconic Green Lantern comics, premiered on August 16, 2026 and immediately rocketed into the top five HBO Max series premieres of all time with 9.3 million global viewers in its first three days.

Green Lantern Gets the True Detective Treatment

Co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers), and Tom King (Supergirl), Lanterns reimagines the Green Lantern mythology as a hardboiled detective story set in America's heartland. Aaron Pierre stars as John Stewart, a newly minted Green Lantern who joins forces with veteran Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. Together, they investigate a mysterious shooting in rural America that leads them into a web of intergalactic conspiracies.

The show's first episode ended with a jaw-dropping twist involving Hal Jordan's fate that has fans theorizing non-stop on social media. Some are convinced the legendary Lantern isn't actually dead, while others are pointing to clues about a hidden Green Lantern villain lurking in the shadows.

James Gunn's Vision Comes to Life

The series is executive produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the architects of DC Studios' new cinematic universe. Lindelof revealed at Comic-Con 2026 that Gunn gave the creative team one key rule: honor the comics while telling an original story. The result is a show that feels both faithful to Green Lantern lore and refreshingly new — think Men in Black meets True Detective with a dash of Yellowjackets.

The CGI work behind the Green Lantern ring has already become a talking point. HBO Max released a behind-the-scenes featurette showing how the visual effects team brought the iconic power ring to life without relying on the usual CGI bombast. Instead, the emphasis is on the ring's glow, its emotional resonance, and the weight of wielding cosmic power in a small-town setting.
