The film, simply titled Avatar Aang, is set after the events of the original Nickelodeon series but before The Legend of Korra. Original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino are directing, with the animation being handled by the newly formed Avatar Studios in partnership with Paramount Animation. The studio has been quietly building a powerhouse team, including several animators who worked on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
At the SDCC Hall H panel, Konietzko and DiMartino revealed that the film will focus on Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko as young adults, dealing with the lingering tensions in the post-war world. The concept art shown featured a stunning painted visual style that blends traditional Asian art influences with modern 2D/3D hybrid animation. What We Know About the Full Slate
Avatar Studios didn't just tease one film. Paramount confirmed that Avatar Aang is the first of three planned animated features set in the Avatar universe. The second will reportedly focus on a new Earth Kingdom Avatar, and the third remains under wraps. Additionally, the Avatar: Seven Havens series (a sequel to Korra) got a full trailer and a 2027 release window.
While an exact release date for Avatar Aang hasn't been locked in, Konietzko said they're targeting late 2027. The production has faced delays — reportedly due to the sheer technical ambition of the animation — but the SDCC reveal made one thing clear: Avatar Studios isn't rushing this.
