John Wick Spinoff 'Caine' Adds Bill Nighy — Donnie Yen's Action Film Gets Even More Star Power

Caine Gets a Major Casting Upgrade: Bill Nighy Joins the Franchise

The John Wick universe keeps expanding, and Lionsgate's Caine spinoff just got significantly more interesting. Bill Nighy — the legendary British actor behind Love Actually, About Time, and Underworld — has officially signed on to the project.

Donnie Yen Takes the Helm

This isn't just another spinoff. Donnie Yen, who absolutely stole scenes as the blind assassin Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, is both directing and starring. The film is currently in production across Budapest and Hong Kong, and the cast keeps growing.

Joining Yen are Mason Thames (The Black Phone), Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), and Rina Sawayama, who's reprising her role as Akira from Wick 4. The script comes from Mattson Tomlin (the upcoming The Batman Part II) and Michael McGrale.

The Story: Freed but Not Free

Picking up after the events of Wick 4, the story follows Caine after being released from his obligations to The High Table — that shadowy council of elite crime families running the global assassin network. But as any John Wick fan knows, "freedom" in this universe is always temporary. The High Table doesn't just let people walk away.

Producing are franchise stalwarts Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road, along with Chad Stahelski (Wick's director) through 87Eleven Entertainment. Keanu Reeves is also producing, keeping his fingerprints on the universe he helped build. Yen serves as executive producer alongside Courtney Brock.

What's Next for Bill Nighy

Nighy's joining the action franchise between two major projects: he'll appear in the series Ride or Die opposite Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham this summer, and will star alongside Helena Bonham Carter in Hugo Blick's California Avenue for the BBC.

The John Wick franchise has consistently proven it can spawn compelling spinoffs — and with Yen directing, Nighy acting, and a script from the guy writing The Batman Part II, Caine is shaping up to be one of the more ambitious entries. The Wick universe shows no signs of slowing down. (☆▽☆)
