An All-Star Cast Tackling Homer's Epic

Nolan's take on Homer's ancient epic brings together Tom Holland as Telemachus (Odysseus' son), Zendaya as the goddess Athena, Matt Damon in a pivotal role, Anne Hathaway as Penelope (Odysseus' wife), and Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy. It's a lineup that made Entertainment Weekly call it "the galaxy of some of the biggest Hollywood stars ever assembled for a single film."

But the real buzz? It's about what Nolan said about Zendaya. During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Matt Damon joked that he and Holland were genuinely jealous of the one-word compliment Nolan gave Zendaya on set: "Perfect."

"It sounds like Christopher Nolan doesn't hand out compliments very often on a movie set," Zendaya told Elle Magazine for their Summer 2026 Epic Issue. "Apparently earning one from the filmmaker feels like winning an Oscar. That's exactly why Matt and Tom were so jealous."

Nolan Calls Homer the "Marvel of Its Day"

In that same Colbert interview, Nolan made a bold comparison: he said The Odyssey has the "original superheroes" and that Homer was essentially "the Marvel of its day." It's a fascinating framing for a director known for grounding even his most fantastical concepts — think Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet — in emotional reality.

This July, audiences will get to see whether Nolan's vision of ancient Greece holds up against the summer's other heavy hitters. Tom Holland and Zendaya are pulling double duty this season — they'll also be starring together in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which lands just before The Odyssey hits theaters.
