Wonder Man Just Got Canceled at Disney+ After a Season 2 Renewal — Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Response Is Going Viral

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Wonder Man in the Marvel Disney+ series

Marvel Reversed Course on 'Wonder Man' Season 2 — And the Emmy-Nominated Star Isn't Bitter. He's Confident.

Marvel just pulled off one of the most confusing streaming reversals of the year. Wonder Man, the Disney+ series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, was renewed for a second season in March — then quietly un-renewed this week. Yes, you read that right: Marvel Studios and Disney+ picked the show up, then canceled the renewal just a few months later.

The decision is a head-scratcher because Wonder Man didn't flop. The series debuted on Disney+ in late January with a solid 618 million minutes of viewing time in its premiere week, according to Nielsen's streaming ratings. It eventually slipped out of the top 10 original titles, sure — but critics and audiences kept praising it, and Abdul-Mateen even landed an Emmy nomination for best actor in a comedy series for his performance.

"See You at the Emmys"

Instead of mourning, Abdul-Mateen took to Instagram with a response that's already spreading across social media. "Word just dropped that Wonder Man won't be coming back," he wrote. "That's life, right? Everything will shake out."

He thanked the fans who watched, shared, and reacted to the show — shoutout to the YouTube reactors — and closed with a line that has fans hyped: "Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS."

The Candyman and Aquaman star will compete for the comedy actor trophy alongside Steve Carell (Rooster), Matthew Rhys (Widow's Bay), Jason Segel (Shrinking), and Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building).

Who's Behind Wonder Man?

Wonder Man was co-created by Destin Daniel Cretton — the director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day — and showrunner Andrew Guest. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige executive produced alongside Louis D'Esposito, Jonathan Schwartz, and Brad Winderbaum. The stacked cast included Ben Kingsley, X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, Olivia Thirlby, Dan Donohue, and Kameron J. Meadows.

What Does This Mean for Marvel's Streaming Strategy?

The reversal raises big questions about Disney+'s Marvel slate. Renewing a show in March only to cancel it in July — especially one with a hit premiere and an Emmy-nominated lead — signals the streamer is getting more aggressive about cutting costs, even when a show is critically liked.

For now, fans are doing what Marvel fans do best: rallying. The "See you at the Emmys" line has become the show's unofficial rallying cry, and if Abdul-Mateen takes home the trophy, you can bet the internet will have something to say about Disney's decision.
